Nearly a week after Part One’s release, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have officially announced that Part Two of the film is coming.

One of the biggest criticisms of Dune was that the live-action adaptation of Frank Herbert’s first novel appeared to be more concerned about setting things up for an eventual sequel. Although this issue wasn’t enough to detract from an otherwise awesome experience, many felt like the director, Denis Villeneuve, was betting too much on the second part being greenlit. Thankfully, Villeneuve’s gamble has paid off. He is now set to return for the sequel, which will complete the novel’s story, while the rest of the cast are expected to reprise their roles as well.
When will Dune 2 be released?
According to Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, Dune 2 is going to release on October 2023. Because it took this long for the studio to confirm the sequel, it suggests that production hasn’t started yet. Considering how fast time flies, we can expect filming of the second part of Dune to start rolling sometime in 2022.
What’s next for Dune?
For now, audiences can continue enjoying Dune on HBO Max and in theaters. Speaking of, the first part of the sci-fi epic didn’t just set a new U.S box office record for Warner Bros. in 2021. The film was already a huge success outside of the United States. In total, the film has earned nearly $225 million globally, making it one of the more successful movies to premiere in the pandemic-stricken world. With that said, now that Villeneuve has gotten his wish for a sequel, it will be interesting to see what else he has in store. Villeneuve has mentioned in several other interviews that he’s interested in making live-action adaptations of more than just Dune. If Dune: Part Two ends up replicating the success of Part One if not exceeding it, the sky is the limit for Villeneuve. In total, Herbert wrote five sequels to Dune, which means that Villeneuve could find himself taking the lead on an MCU-like franchise if he plays his cards right.
