If you thought GTA has always been the most controversial game in the industry, think again. Far Cry has often run into some form of controversy one way or another, for the most part. This time, the controversy stems from an unexpected place, and that is PETA Latino.
Far Cry 6 has a feature of you owning a pet in the game, but players have found out that there are mini-games in which their pets can partake, one of which is the cockfighting mini-game. The game mini-game format closely resembles popular fighter games such as Tekken or Mortal Kombat. This mini-game grabbed PETA’s attention, which called it a “horrific blood sport” in a statement issued on October 7, 2021, the same day as Far Cry 6’s worldwide release. PETA has demanded Ubisoft replace the cockfighting mini-game with something else. PETA Latino’s senior manager, Alicia Aguayo, said in a statement: Far Cry 6 aims to showcase the reality of the world in this fictional land of Yara. Cockfighting is an illegal sport in many parts of the world, but it is also quite popular in some areas. Far Cry 6 is filled with many exotic animals, and players have the option to both be friendly towards them or be forced to eliminate the animals should they provoke the wild beasts. PETA has been known for its aggressive equal rights stance for animals and has taken on many different industries, including movies, television, and games. It is not new that Ubisoft has faced a backlash from PETA. Ubisoft’s highly popular Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag also received significant resentment from PETA for introducing whaling in the game.
